what are some of the negative effects Dutch Drug Laws have on Amsterdam?

Question by marzilla: what are some of the negative effects Dutch Drug Laws have on Amsterdam?
I am doing a debate on the legalization of marijuana in the US, and I am arguing against legalization. Amsterdam’s drug policies are sure to come up in our debate, and I need some cons of these laws to repel them with. thanks so much!

Difficult for me to answer because I actually think the policies that are in place here are working and effective!
Anyway, a couple of comments first. The policies in place are not “Amsterdam’s”, they are nation-wide and apply for the country as a whole and not just the city of Amsterdam (which is a common myth)
Secondly no drugs are “legal” in the Netherlands (another myth and this will probably surprise many in your debate!) Drug use is not illegal (actually this is the same for many countries) but possession and sales are still illegal. Soft drugs (marijuana & hash) are ‘tolerated’ sales from licenced coffeeshops under given conditions only
- no more than five grams per person may be sold in any one transaction, per person, per day;
- no hard drugs may be sold;
- drugs may not be advertised;
- the coffeeshop must not cause any nuisance;
- no drugs may be sold to persons under the age of 18, nor may minors be admitted on the premises.
Hard drugs are not legal, not tolerated under any conditions and are acted on strongly.
So back to the cons. Well with the policies of the Netherlands, the use of cannabis has seen a decline in all age groups including school kids since 1996 and this trend is the same for hard drugs. In comparison with other countries then it is in the middle range but lower than many Western European countries including the UK and also compared with the US as well, so this is not a real arguement winner.
The only thing that I can really say is an issue with the drugs policies is the link to organised crime (but this is the same case as with countries like the US where marijuana is illegal as well). There is a constant battle against the crime rings that operate the supply of marijuana and Amsterdam authorities especially have issued a number of initatives to crack down on the links with organised crime as of late.
The only other thing I can think of which is a current issue in the news over the last year is the issue of “drug tourism”. The polices of the Netherlands are not the same in it’s neighbouring countries (Belgium, Germany & France especially) and day tourists drive to coffeeshops on the bordering towns to purchase and drive back home. As a result coffeeshops have had to be closed due to an influx of tourists causing a public nusiance in Roosendaal & Bergen op Zoom, and there has been a discussion underway in Maastricht to have a “membership only” basis for sales. Plus there have been an increase in checks on the roads by Belgian & German authorities.
Drug tourism is not an attractive feature and personally speaking (having lived in Amsterdam for years) it is incredibly annoying to have a city which is so beautiful, culturally & historically rich & with so much to do, known only for “I can smoke legally there”. Many locals live with this and hate the small element of tourists that only come over to smoke & drink themselves crazy. This is something I personally would argue is a negative to a city.
Anyway, good luck, and hope I gave you some ideas (even though, like I said, I personally I would be arguing for the other side of the debate!)
This is a good document to read http://www.minbuza.nl/dsresource?objectid=buzabeheer:58788&type=pdf it’s produced by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs so you can be sure the info is accurate

My father died at 57 from complications of alcoholism. I have been married 27 years & have 4 kids. My oldest was dx with alcohol addiction at 16. He was arrested 3 times for fighting and ended up in prison for 2 years @ age of 17 4 felony battery! From the day I learned my son was drinking/doing drugs, our family got therepy. Indiv, and family sessions. With love & support from God, my mom, and dear friends, we came thru that painful time! Son is 25, marriend and doing well. We have not had alcohol in our home for 13 years. My husbands family can’t have a gathering without it! Now that 3 of my kids are over 21, a brother in law constantly encourages them 2 drink shots etc at family events (where young kids are wittness to this b-i-l’s very DRUNK behavior). I’ve tried to explain our feelings of alcohol being inapprop @ bdays, 1st comm etc. And tried to explain our being hurt when they encourage kids 2 drink. Now, they r not talking to me. They say I AM Rediculous! Am I? Or, are they?

Hello, I am a 20 year old boy (man?) who is trying to turn his life around. At age 16 I started using marijuana and alcohol, and from there started working my way up to harder drugs (MDMA, LSD, cocaine). But recently I had the epiphany that I need to change in order to get what I want out of life, and also in order to do the right thing. I confessed everything to my father who is deeply concerned about me.
But that’s not the point of this question. I just thought you could better answer it with that background information on me.
I want to help other people. Sit people down, and talk to them. I am a good listener and good at understanding other peoples problems and telling them what they need to hear; I’ve been good at this all my life. So I want to go professional on this. The problem is I’m not sure of the specific college degree or field I am trying to go for. Some things that do come to mind, though, are: Psychology, Psychiatry, Therapy, Counseling. I know some of these things require graduate school, which is okay, but I’d also like to know what can be accomplished with just a bachelors.
Ideally, I see myself having a steady job in which I see patients and talk to them about issues they are having and provide treatment for them. Mental disorders interest me – severe ones and mild ones. Even people who don’t have a diagnosed disorder but are just seeking help.
I am just seeking information and suggestions. If you have a job in a like field, YOUR help would be much appreciated. Thank you everyone.
ps: I also enjoy reading and writing, and am a musician, if that makes a difference.

Could some one please edit my essay on drunk driving?
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on July 9, 2010
Right now I dont feel like my paper is flowing very well. Please help……
I’m having a hard time tieing it all together to come up with a closing.
Drunk Driving: Something Must Be Done
He never thought it would happen to him…..After having a few drinks he got into his car and headed home, but he never made it. He was drunk and driving and in his own little world, when out of nowhere someone pulled out in front of him. He never had a chance to stop…. And just like that his life and family was gone.
Drunk Driving is considered a serious crime; it is wrong, irresponsible and destroys many lives. Every thirty minutes someone is killed in an alcohol related crash and every two minutes someone else has been injured, according to (http://www.edgarsnyder.com/drunk-driving/statistics.html drunk driving statistics for the United States. Every person needs to be held accountable to for their actions, getting behind the wheel after a night of drinking out hascan have serious consequences; possibly killing or hurting yourself and others, losssing you of one’s drivers licenses and oneyou could have to spend time in jail as well as having hefty fines.
Alcoholic Alcohol is one theof the most abused substances in the United States weather the user is of age or not with no regard to the age of the individual user .For most users their first influence with drinking begins in childhood, they grow up watching their relativities drink in front of them. To some this is considered a normal thing.
Drunk driving is a very serious problem in our society today. People go out and party without a thought and thought or care and then with their liquid courage, they decide to drive putting everyone at risk, they have slower reaction and impaired judgment and they cause about seventy two thousand five hundred in 2008 there was an estimated eleven thousand seven hundred and seventy three people that died in drunk driving crashes, according to www.madd.org Mothers Against Drunk Drivers).deaths each year. Drivers need to think before entering into a vehicle after drinking, there is no excuse for drinking and driving, no excuse for being irresponsible. If someone chooses to go out and drink they need to take a cab home. Even one drink many be too much.
Everyday people are arrested for driving under the influence, while law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on these dangerous offenders, for many of these drivers this will not be there first DUI offense according to (alcoholism.about.com/cs/drive/a/aa082797.htmIf a drunk driver gets caught drinking they could have to do up to one year in jail These drivers may be supervised to find that penalties for DUI even if it is there first offense, have increased due to groups like Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Groups like these and many others have helped to pass hundreds of new laws to stop drinking driving Nationwide since 1980. , these days it is said that one DUI could cost you ten thousand dollars, which is a lot of money for one night of fun although the fines and consequences could be much worse. In order to bring down the number of DUI states have taken some effective measures such as immediate license suspension, lowering the blood alcohol consummation levels, setting up sobriety checkpoints, and media campaigns about the danger of drink and drink.
When it comes to drinking and driving some feels there are some people that feel that celebrities get special treatment. Lindsay Lohan was arrested after crashing her car into a treetree; where she was found to have been drinking and was in possession of a small amount of cocaine. Lindsay took a plea deal on a misdemeanor drunk driving and possession charge where is she only served eighty four minutes in jail. Her original sentence was a day in jail but due to overcrowding in the jail she was sent free. What does this say to our society? If celebrities can get away with it why can’t we. This isn’t a good message to be sending out to our society.
why do secretaries of some A.A. open meetings require that attendees identify themselves as Alcoholics?

Open AA meetings are just that, open to all drinkers and non drinkers. Closed meetings are for alcoholics

How come some things that are wrong in America were brought upon by our own government?
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on July 4, 2010
1. Crime (there are many people in jail/prison who are innocent. example: the murder rate in New Orleans. im in New Orleans right now. )
2. LSD. (the drug was passed out by the CIA back in the 50s to see what effect it would have on people)
3. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS (no strong border protection. maybe we should learn how to protect our borders like russia did during the cold war).
4. OBESITY. ( not to say that its not their own fault for being overweight, but most of the healthy, nutritious foods are expensive and hard to find. too many preservatives. the FDA should pass laws on this since it is now an epidemic.)
5.WAR ON DRUGS. (just another way for our government to tax us. so instead of doing something about alcoholism, especially with teens, and Cigarette deaths, the government wastes tax money by locking up kids for having half a joint on them. a joint that they will not die from, unlike cigarettes.)
lol….i wonder if IDOL CHITCHAT would be this sarcastic if i told her this question in person.

My 9 year old cousin (Drake) is currently living with my husband and I. His Mother (she’s my cousin to) is back in rehab for her crack cocaine addiction she was court ordered to give Drake up. His Father was shot and killed 4 years ago. The only other option was he either came to live with me or he went into foster care and I didn’t want him to go into foster care so I took him in. I’m only 24 years old and my husband is 29. No one else in my family would take my cousin because he’s known to get out of hand at times and to be honest, I really don’t think they care what happens to him.
I need some advice on a couple of things…. Every night before bed I get all of Drakes stuff together for school the next day. I put $4.00 in an envelope in his backpack for lunch. I leave at 5 am during the week for work and my husband puts Drake on the bus. I was doing laundry last night and I found $85 in Drakes pants. I asked him where he got the money from and he said his friend told him he could have it. I didn’t say anything else and when he went to bed I asked my husband what he thought about it and he said that he gives Drake $5.00 everyday for lunch because Drake asks him for lunch money. I told my husband that I already give him money. I’m assuming that this is the money he’s been making off of my husband so I took it. I have not spent it but I’m not going to give it back to him due to the fact that he’s been lying about needing money. I have also decided to start making him lunches so he doesn’t need money during the day. This is not the first time he has lied to us. He stole some of my fake jewelry about a month ago and sold it to another kid at the park. I got it back but he lied about the whole thing.
I received a phone call at work today and Drake allegedly touched a girls private area while playing and then proceeded to punch her in the face when she wouldn’t play along. He’s being suspended for 10 days starting tomorrow. I spoke to the school psychologist and he said Drake needs counseling for everything he’s been through. I agree but we already tried going to counseling and he was literally mute at every visit. How on earth do I handle this? Where do I go? Who do I talk to?
Thank you in advance for any advice.

Some grammar questions
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on April 26, 2010
I can’t find simple answers to these questions in the CMS or via web pages.
Here they are:
– would vs will
Let’s say you’re discussing a plans for a party or a law that may or may not actualize but you’re describing what they will entail.
Would you say “the party would” or “the law would incriminate people who blah blah blah”
instead of “the party will” or “the law will”?
I’ve noticed in some newspapers the use of “will” even about laws and ordinances that are being proposed or voted on.
–,which is.., or not?
I notice “which is” is occasionally omitted in writing.
For example, “She was referred to Teen Court, [which is] an early intervention program of the Visalia Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.”
When is it ok to omit the “which is” ? Is there a rule here?
– When do you say “said that” or merely “said” when using attribution at the beginning of a sentence?
– Why is “had” needed in the following sentence from an Times article?
“Federal authorities said Tuesday that they “had” cracked
the largest case of identity theft in U.S. history,…”
And is the “has” needed in the following sentence from another times article:
“DSW also “has” sent notification letters to affected
customers whenever possible…”
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
some cops say legalize drugs, others dont, who side do you agree with?
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on April 26, 2010
Prohibition does not prevent cannabis use by children or the mentally ill, the vulnerable populations whom we supposedly want to protect. Instead, cannabis prohibition makes it more difficult for parents, patients, society, doctors and law enforcement to control cannabis use.
The Drug War makes honest education about cannabis impossible, and leaves cannabis users marginalized in ways that make their lives more stressful.
This stress is unhealthy for everyone, but it is certainly most damaging to people with schizophrenia.
Cannabis prohibition is not merely a failure; it is a counterproductive fraud that is harming those whom we claim we want to protect.
There are currently more teens in treatment centers for marijuana in comparison to those admitted for alcohol.
Only an idiot would have to ask why alcohol is not the no#1 problem
after all alcohol is perfectly legal ( If you are 21.)
That is due to responsible people handling alcohol by way of the carding and id system.
Contraband markets make no age disgression.
Since the crackdown on tobacco there are 75% fewer teens trying or using tobacco.
However when it comes to cannabis and other illicit substances it’s a whole
other ball game.
Control, regulation and better education work prohibition, dose not.
Or as John Walters of the ondcp (Office for national drug control policy) calls it “ a war on drugs” (Sorry John but it’s true look at the Netherlands)
America loves a war even if it is on it’s own people.
One of several reason they don’t legalize drugs is not because of the harm of drugs,
But people would lose more money in the long run.
Some of the people behind the support of this irrational so called war are
The tobacco industry,
the alcohol and distilled spirit industry ( people simply don’t drink as much, or decide not to drink at all with cannabis meaning a decline in there sales.
The pharmaceutical corporations can not make money on whole or raw cannabis, but they can charge an arm and a leg for there synthetic Marinol (dronabinol) CIII.
The textile and paper industry would lose out from hemp production, sinse hemp dose not need to go through all the various processes that ordinary tree products would. Also it’s possible to get two harvest in one season.
However people don’t know the difference between industrial hemp and smokeable cannabis, yet they are able to distinguish between the two in other country’s like Germany, the UK , Netherlands and even Canada, but our `DEA agents are so dumb they cant tell the difference between a stalk and a bush.
Also people who have any knowledge of growing high quality cannabis will tell you that male plants should never be grown next to your high grade female plants,
(unless of course you want to pollinate for future seed production).
When it comes to farming hemp the males are left in tact to pollinate the females and produce as much seed as possible.
This would mean a seedy mess for the pot smoker to clean up and produce undesirable future generations of smokeable cannabis.
If anything, Hemp farming would be anti marijuana and would harm any outdoor pot farming within a one mile radius of any hemp farm.
The petroleum industry would also be affected, sinse almost everything that can be made from petroleum can be synthesized from hemp oil, everything from bio fuel to even plastics. If North America would use a third of it’s land for hemp production we could create enough bio fuel to supply an area the size of Canada.
Now also for a moment consider how many people are incarcerated over just cannabis who are currently in the prisons and jails.
If cannabis were legalized and all inmates serving time for cannabis were freed there would be an over abundance of empty cells, and millions of guards in this country would be no longer needed.
The prison building industry would almost be obsolete ( and if all drugs were legalized that would mean even more empty cells).
So the prison system must have some means of gaining more inmates.
Not to mention other areas such as treatment centers, probation.etc
or HIDTA high intensity drug traffic areas where money is fed in to law enforcement,
(they would miss there green $$$)
Drugs , not even alcohol are the cause of the fundamental ills of society, rather than checking people for the presence of drugs, they should first test people for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.
