Which do you think would work better for drug addicts. Mandatory prison sentences or rehab?

I feel rehab would be better, but the govt thinks overwise.

Who agrees if that first offense drunk driving should be mandatory loss of driving privileges for life?

When is our country the government and people going to start punishing drunk drivers to show them they have a disease called alcoholism and are a threat to life and are destroying relationships and family. My wifes son and daughter-in-law and baby grandson were almost killed by a drunk driver who ran a red light and totalled their vehicle. She will probably be ordered by the court to go to AA for her probation as most offenders will not stay in AA after their probation is up, and she will get drunk again and maybe next time kill somebody drunk driving. If you have a problem with drinking please get help. If you kill a person drunk driving you will go to prison, and 10 years for manslaughter is a long time not to mention the emotional pain you will never get over in killing a life. If I ever see another person with an alcoholic beverage in their hand I will take it from you and I will dump it down the sink. Try fight me for it cause it don’t matter if you hit me for i’ll put you in jail

If therapy were mandatory for adults, would we even need child psychiatrists?

Ok, I get that many children have legitimate mental illnesses that require professional therapy, but for the rest, wouldn’t the best to way to ensure the proper mental health of the world’s children to be to to make sure the people responsible for their health and safety have proper mental health themselves?

I mean, children that don’t have mental illnesses are in therapy because of their parents divorce or they were abused or one or both of their parents is an alcoholic or a drug addict or has in some other way, caused them serious emotional harm. And when they do go to their therapist/psychiatrist, they spend one hour a week/month with a person who does everything they can to get them to trust them enough to come out of their shell a little bit … only to send them back to their screwed up parents. One gets the sense that child psychiatry is like emptying the ocean with a teacup. Unless parents get treatment themselves, there can be no hope for children.

I know the suggestion of making therapy mandatory is somewhat outrageous, but so is the idea of an Earth full of mentally well-adjusted adults raising mentally well-adjusted children.

Should state medical licensing boards and the courts be allowed to order mandatory AA/NA participation?

Should state medical licensing boards and the courts be allowed to order mandatory AA/NA participation?
I was an RN who self-reported a substance abuse problem to the NC board of nursing. One of the requirements is that the nurse not just attend meetings, but do all the “stuff” that the 12 steps require. With the main requirement that you profess to the group a belief in a “Higher Power”. Evidence of your participation and attitude have to be documented by your “sponsor” and submitted monthly to the NC Board of Nursing. Well, I believe that AA is inherently religious, and that this requirement violates the 2nd amendment. There were several Rn’s who were atheists and understandingly objected to the higher power nonsense, since by their nature as atheists they of course do not believe in a higher power. But the Board would not lift the requirement for them. I’m Christian, but I believe AA/NA are religious cults and my religion teaches against praying in groups outside of church services.
Sorry this is so long, but I’m dying to hear everyone’s opinion.
typo: “understandably”, not “understandingly”.
mnwomen:
As a matter of fact when I received my nursing license the subject of Board disciplining programs wasn’t in the by-laws. No one knows what their particular disciplinary actions will be until aech case is reviewed. But when I went to nursing school I didn’t plan to become addicted to drugs, so there was no reason to go before the board and say: “BTW when and if I get on drugs what is the board’s discipline policy”?
As far as the judicial system is concerned most people who drive impaired know what the consequences are before they do it, but that still does not give the government the right to violate the constitution as part of the punsihment.
Read the 2nd amendment.
Rosen: You’re definately in the minority amoung your colleagues I’m sure.
The NCBON wouldn’t hear of giving an option to choose behavioral therapy like R. Recovery, Lifering, etc. It’s so damn frustrating because I don’t think there are any hard studies that support AA’s claim that they have a “97%” recovery rate. Unfortunately the majority of SA IOP programs are run by step-nazis, at least here in Charlotte.

I want the police to arrest my son who is a drug addict, and offer him mandatory rehab or jail. How to do it??

The drugs/alcohol are out of control. He drives/drunk or high and avoids getting caught. He dissappears for days. He never pays taxes. He uses the Emergency Room as a doctors office and never pays the bill. He refuses drug treatment voluntarily. I am at the end of my rope. I want to see him stopped, but not go to jail. I want to see him court ordered into an inpatient rehab center, where he can get some help. How can I alert the authorities, so they can find him drunk driving or in posession of drugs, and know that the judge will NOT put him in jail, but order mandatory rehab?? I’ll even pay for the rehab if it isn’t too expensive. But, I need the court order to make sure he stays for the entire period. If he doesn’t, then the judge can throw him in jail. Who do I contact at the state, county or township level to ASK for the Rehab sentence ahead of time??
My son is 25 y/o.
