Alcohol Addiction – What is alcoholism?
Alcohol addiction is simply defined as a compulsive need for an intoxicating liquid that is obtained from fermented grain or fruit. These liquids include beer, wine, and other hard liquors.
Alcoholism is present when a person craves alcohol and cannot limit or contain his or her drinking. If someone experiences withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, or anxiety when alcohol consumption has ceased, or if there is a need to drink greater amounts of alcohol in order to feel a high, that person is most likely alcoholic.
Some may think that it’s just a matter of having the will to stop drinking, but alcoholism is more complicated than that. An alcoholic’s craving for alcohol is so great that it suppresses their ability to stop drinking. The majority of alcoholics need assistance to stop drinking. With treatment and support from family and friends, many have been able to stop drinking and rebuild their lives. It is a sad fact however that there are still some who are unable to stop in spite of these aids.

i keep hearing roomers that in prison they don’t let inmates have gummy bears because the can sit them in the window cell and the ferment into alcohol. if this is true how does it work and is it possible to do it without a substance like yeast?
Can I turn orange juice or fruit into alcohol? Inmates save their juice and attempt to ferment?

Okay, so I work in our county jail as a correctional officer. I have worked here for around 8 months now. Our jail is a smaller jail- holds around 30 inmates total. We give them orange juice for breakfast and also fruit every day- when we do cell searches we have to empty out any beverages they are attempting to save. We do this to prevent bugs and the smell, but also the inmates are attmepting to ferment this into alcohol. My question is how possible is this on such a small amount AND how long does it actually take at room temperature to turn juice and/or fruit into alcohol? How potent is the alcohol? Can a person become intoxicated on one 8 ounce glass?
haha. I just want to understand how it actually turns into alcohol without any help other than sitting in a cup? To me I would think it would just rot and eventually get mold if not removed. I really just want to know if it can turn into alcohol and if so the potency? Like, if an inmate managed to keep a cup of their orange juice for a long time, it get to the way they think it should be, they drink it- is that even enough to get them drunk??? It just seems like someone made it up to me.
Why can’t alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes be injected into yourself to lower your tolerance to alcohol?

I read that alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes are what help you process alcohol and after years of drinking you develop a deficiency in these enzymes, therefore making your tolerance higher (you need to drink more to get the same “drunk” feeling).
My question is: Why can’t we just medically raise our levels of these enzymes back up to where they used to be, or even higher, so that we get drunk faster and therefore drink less?
Likewise, why isn’t there a treatment for alcoholism that tries to balance this enzyme to a “normal” level in order to more normalize someone’s drinking habits?
to answer the first reply, acetaldehyde dehydrogenase will detoxify acetaldehyde to acetic acid. Is that still as fatal?
What changes would you bring into this country if you could run it for at least one week?

Seriously this is what I would do:
1I would make it mandatory for heavy drinking alcoholics and drug addicts to have forced sterilization and put into a island of their own since many do not want to clean up.
2I would have all pedophiphiles totally castrated and injected with female hormones, that would teach them!
3Would make it against the law for married people to have affairs and have the ones that do arrested.
4Instead of the goverment whining about the deficit, I’de have more money printed and pay it all. Now that would solve the problem.
5To keep the peace in this country, I would divide all states and cities to accomadate all racist people on one side with their own kind, and the non-racist to the other side. Anyone wanting to cross the other’s territory would have to have a legal pass and permission
6Greedy theifs would get their hands cut off.
7Lunatics and retarded people would have forced sterilization and a lombatomy for the lunatic.
8Violent criminals would have their feet, and hands cut off, and their voice box removed.
9Give gays a city of their own called City of Sodom and Gommorah.

Conscious conserv, I would consider the punishments justified.
Too much goverment intrusion…horsefeathers! I would be giving people what they want, to be left alone and live the way they choose to their lives but in their own city amongst their own kind.
I tell you though, what Amendment I’d do away with. It would be the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside.”
I would not give any citizenship to any kids born to illegal aliens.

Do you believe it is fair for the court system to mandate a treatment program that is faith based?
Should a secular treatment program be mandated instead, for those in need of treatment who are not religious or spiritual??

he was 16 at the time, it was not court ordered and the firearms owner act is poorly worded they do not define “mental health facility” as a rehabilitation center and on the application says it’s a felony to falsely admit info. so what im wondering is since he was self mandated, received no physiciatric care while staying, and also was never banned by a professional that he is not able to obtain a FOID card. so does this mean he’s still eligible because he loves hunting and is looking toward getting a rifle.
What Govt on Earth turn the citizens into gamblers + alcoholic + prison inmates just to create taxes & profit?

My brother in law is battling a heroin addiction. He voluntarily spent 30 days in rehab but relapsed as soon as he came out. Is there any way my wife or her family can get him court ordered rehab in massachusetts even though he is 23? we have heard of a section 12 or 13 order but cant seem to find info on it. please help as we don’t think at the rate he is going he will reach 24. If no such thing exist in Massachusetts what about Florida as my wife and I live in Florida so we may be able to get him down here if such a law exist in Florida.

First off i know you cant make a person want to quit or get help .But there has to be a limit to where as a parent we wanna prevent our children from hitting that rock bottom .i seen a man on a show today say he wont have his 19 year old crackheroinn addicted daughter committedd because it would hurt him and sh would be mad at him. Screw that for me not EVERYONE if the child is that you legal age or not im gonna let them hate me and do what has to be done.what would you do ? Not saying one way is wrong verses another way .
Just a side note a person over 18 can legally placed in rehab by a parent spouse or family member if the person is declared incompatent or a harm to them selves or others or if in the majority of cases there is an underling of self medicating for something like a Dual diagnosis occurs when someone has both a mental disorder and an alcohol or drug problem.
SK its easier to get drugs in prison than on the streets its more profitable..

I began high school in the state of Florida. I had a 3.3 GPA in both 9th and 10th grade. In 11th, I transferred to an Environmental and Biomedical Science “Magnet Program”. I took AP US History, AP Environmental Science, and AP English Language and Composition. My remaining classes were honors/gifted classes. My grades were decent, but I couldn’t pull above a 3.4 because of my previous years. Regardless, I had As in all of my AP classes, and was doing fine in everything but math, which is expected. Unfortunately, about 3-quarters of the way through the year, I struggled with bulimia and had to go to a rehabilitation center, which prohibited me from going to school. When I got out, I was told that I would receive no credit from the school because the credits were ANNUAL, not BI-ANNUAL. They told me I’d have to take 11th grade over. I moved to Washington State; just a family situation. Upon enrollment to my new school, they told me that even without the credits from my 11th grade year, I still had enough credits to be able to be a senior, and that I’d meet the graduation requirements this year. Pretty sure this is because high school in Florida is 9th-12th, and high school in Washington is 10th-12th. Anyways, they placed me in terrible classes and REFUSE to switch me out. Something to do with attendance. They have me in Chemistry, Algebra 2…classes that I’ve practically already taken, and that look absolutely horrible on a transcript. They could at least throw in some honors and AP classes! I have the option of graduating as is, or possibly taking my 11th grade year over. Problem #2: If I decide to take 11th over, they still won’t move me into AP classes, because of the attendance issue. If I’m going to go to school for two more goddamn years I want it to get me into a good college.
I’d ideally like to get into a state college, do well, and transfer after two years. I want to get into a good graduate school for Biology, and pursue a PhD in Evolutionary and Sociobiology.
I have high hopes. I’m a smart girl. I messed it up for myself. Does anybody have some brilliant plan to get me out of this mess? Or at least some advice on what to do?

To LD: Thank you, great idea. But would you recommend retaking the 11th grade, or going forward without it? I think that emphasizing that I decided to go to school for another year when I could have easily graduated would only add to the impact. Easier said than done, of course.

My son got arrested for letting a lot of “minor” traffic tickets that he let go until he finally got a warrant issued and he is in jail for 6 months.
The inmates are released back into the general population with no rehabilitation required or even available. My idea: Since the percentage of inmates in this correctional facility (privately owned) have no High School Diploma (92% at this facility) Why not make G.E.D classes mandatory and require them to get the G.E.D.? Because the percentage of inmates who return to this facility 2 times or more is 73%
how would the average taxpayer voice their idea? I know it would probably be up to a Judge making this part of their incarceration requirements/ I know very little about politics. I would love to know how this aspect of the law works.
Additional details: You see, my son was a high school drop-out couldn’t get a job, got bored…got into trouble, but I know NOW that he was bored in school therefore just quit. He is very intelligent, this is his second time in jail. Can’t get into a college without a high school eqiv., now his drivers license is revoked. His father and I have been talking about his future and how it looks bleek. So, that’s how the idea came about. Because the way we look at it, there needs to be a way to offer some kind of “answer”. (Yes, he was raised right. our daughter graduated with honors and went to college.)
Its just a viscious cycle that I am struggling with. He now knows that he should have listened to us and tells us this, but with no education, no dr. license,,,,,aarrrggggg
custody case my son is 2 yrs old will i run into future issues?

i recently went to court to retain custody of my 2 yr old son, i went in front of the judge submitted a dna test police reports and such his order was mother is to complete 9 months of intensive impatient drug treatment, there was a no contact order issued he also made it pertantly clear that she can only see him at my approval under supervision after she completes 9 months of rehab
we recently moved to dobbs ferry from florida the order was issued in florida is there a law that protects me fro running into future problems seeing as the judges orders clearly state that i am the custodail parent and that she is to have no contact which means no calling me my wife my mother grandparents etc… weather it be her or anyonbe else doing it for her
my 2 year old son is very happy with the only woman he has ever called mommy he is very happy he is taken to the park he is given nothing but unconditional love and this women who the last time saw him in febuary of 09 he cried as soon as i put him in her arms which was @ a halfway house and she still went out and smoked cracked
i dont get it i know i have to tell my son about her and i cannot wait until he is to old but he cant be to youbg either i do want him to know about her i will not ever tell him about the bad things i want him to choose if he wants a relationship with her assuming at that time she has long term sobreity (meaning 2 plus years)
i do not want him to resent me because he one day finda a birth certificate or sees pictures etc… i am just concerned about my son he has a good life and she (his biological) is only that and he will know her by her first name she has other kids whom she has nothing to do with i am just confused as to how to handle this situtation i knopw i am protected by the law i also know when the biological is sober she is not a bad person but i also know she cant tay clean to save her ass longer then a few months and all i want is for her to get well so my son can decide if he wants her in his life once he is old enough meaning somewhere between 5 & 7 yrs of age if i can find a correct way to tell him without tramatizing him because he has a Mommy and doesnt need a person in his life that wnats him to call her mommy yet is only there once every few months for day or so he was a convenience she used to ask me to keep him awake so she could play with him @ 11 pm @ night when he was only a yr old if he wouldnt eat she would force feed him i one time had to take him out of her hands and tell her to get the f**k away from my kid another time i had to pick her sorry azz up off the floor as she was passed out on drugs (many times)n i just dont know what to do i want the best life for my son and if that means she is a part of it somehow some way ok as long as he knows that she is only the biological , not the mommy
my son has so much love given to him by my wife and her sister and brother in law and all her cusins and her parents and ofcourse my mother and grand parents and aunt and uncles and cousins and so on please anyone who has experienced such things pos on this,thanks,

can someone over 18 (under 21) be forced into rehab?

i have a family friend that has been in and out of rehab for cocaine and heroin and is now over 18… is there any way to get court ordered rehab for this person(texas)? she recently got a dui and is under 21. i know texas has a zero tolerance for that. will she be put on probation? or will the just take her license from her? i know for a fact that she would fail a drug test if she was put on probation. what can her family do… they tried once to put her in rehab after turning 18 but she checked out right way.
