My father has end stage liver disease – how much time does he have left?

My father is 53 years old and has just been diagnosed with end stage liver disease. Unknown to the family, he had been diagnosed with Hepatitis C nearly 10 years ago and never sought treatment. He was in ICU on a ventilator and bleeding from his nose and mouth for about a week, he is now at home. His abdomen is very swollen (he looks 9 months pregnant), and his bloodwork and ammonia levels are all out of whack. When he was in the hospital, they said in order to be put on the list for a liver transplant he had to be alcohol free for 6 months. He can’t be put on the list because the doctors said he doesn’t have 6 months left to live, but this is the only sort of time frame we’ve been given. I moved out of state in February and it is hard for me to get up there to visit him, as it’s either a 14 hour drive or a very expensive plane ticket. I just wish I could know how much time he has left. Any input or help at all is much appreciated . . . feel free to email me as well. Thanks.
FYI – it has been about 3 weeks since his initial diagnosis.

Are alcoholics who cling to the ‘disease’ theory scumbags trying to excuse their poor behavior?

The idea of alcoholism/addiction as a disease is highly controversial and by no means accepted by all doctors. No consistent biological marker has ever been identified for addiction, or for any mental disorder for that matter. “Alcoholism” basically boils down to voluntary actions. A beer does not jump down one’s throat. Since the entirety of “alcoholism” is freely-chosen actions, it is not a disease because actions and beliefs, no matter how harmful or unorthodox, are not and can not be diseases. That’s not what diseases are.

What pisses me off is that some bum drinks a liter of vodka, decides to go driving, slams into a minivan driven by a nice happy family, killing them all. And we’re supposed to say, “oh, it was the disease! The driver wasn’t responsible! He doesn’t belong in prison, he belongs in the healthcare system!” Liberals don’t think anyone is responsible for their actions anymore, the fact is that no one is forcing some drunken idiot to drink, he voluntarily pours alcohol down his throat and should be held responsible for his actions. If alcoholics actually had good values, were good citizens and took responsibility for their lives, the problem would be solved.
“In lots of cases alcoholism is genetic meaning even a taste of alcohol leads to cravings for more .”

Not true. In studies where “alcoholics” are given non-alcoholic beverages and told they are alcoholic beverages, they drink to excess, but when they are given alcohol without their knowledge they do not crave more from just one sip.

Is drug addiction the only disease you get thrown in jail for having it?

If it’s a disease why can you buy it on street corners? If it’s a dsease why do they have treatment limits? I could go on and on.

Can I contract the Alcoholism Disease from attending an AA meting? ?

I was court ordered to go to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. I was arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance, not alcohol. I enjoy taking Ambien sleeping pills, they help me sleep. That particular night I suppose I drove somewhere, Ambien causes blackout in high doses.

Anyways, I was court ordered to Alcoholics Anonymous for some reason. I don’t drink, alcohol hurts my stomach.

I was sitting in the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and I keep hearing everyone saying that they have a disease called Alcoholism. I have never heard of this Alcoholism Disease. I have heard of alcoholism, but I always thought if someone had alcoholism then they were homeless people. This confused me because I have to sit amongst these people and I don’t want to catch some disease. Is there a doctor at these AA meetings that is diagnosing these people with the Alcoholism Disease? I haven’t been diagnosed with the alcoholism disease, I have had people at the meeting tell me that I’m an alcoholic but they didn’t appear to be doctors. Does anyone know of any precautions I can take while I go to these AA meetings, so I don’t get the alcoholism virus?

I’m very concerned about this. Is it possible for me to catch the alcoholism disease from going to AA meetings? I can’t afford contracting the alcoholism virus at this time.

I don’t understand why the Judge of my Court Case forced me to go to Alcoholics Anonymous. I’m confused as to why the Judge sent me to a place where it is possible for me to contract a disease. The court ordering me to AA seems to go against my basic Human Rights, civil rights, and others.

Is it possible to catch the Alcoholism Disease or Virus from AA?
