% of alcoholism in NJ? How to stop it?

Question by LungCancerAssociation: % of alcoholism in NJ? How to stop it?
Curiously, I just wanted to know what is the % of alcholism within adults in the state of New Jersey, USA.
Also, just wondering, what steps can someone take to completely change the state law and render alcohol as an Illegal drug?
All answers, even with little information, are appreciated.
Point to NOTE: I did not ask for a Constitutional amendment in the entire United States. Just like they have different driving ages, can’t we simply ban it in one state, New Jersey in this case.

Answer by Eiliat
Alcohol will never again be an illegal drug in the US. Prohibition was tried,it failed so incredibly horribly that it was the only constitutional amendment to ever be repealed. If you insist on trying, you just have to lobby Congress for a new amendment.
No, there is no way to ban alcohol in one state. It would be an abridgement of personal rights. Even if it were technically possible to outlaw alcohol, doing so in one state would be disastrous. Riots would be everywhere.

Is it legal to be fired for asking your boss for a LOA to enter rehab for alcoholism?
Posted by admin in Drug & Alcohol Laws on November 7, 2010
Question by jeafox: Is it legal to be fired for asking your boss for a LOA to enter rehab for alcoholism?
My brother asked his employer for a leave of absence so he could go to rehab for alcoholism (forget that his employer supposedly has an open door policy and programs to help its employees with problems without any reprocussions), his boss responded by firing him. Im pretty sure this is a violation of his ADA rights, but would like to know exactly what laws are being broken and the best way to handle the situation, as my brother cannot afford legal consult.
Best answer:
Answer by Phoenix
I’m pretty sure that is in violation of Family Medical Leave of Absence laws. It would depend what, exactly, your brother was supposedly fired for. In an at-will state (most states), employment is at-will and you can be fired any time for just about any reason. However, you can’t lose your job for requesting FMLA as you are guaranteed 12 weeks per year and your employer has to guarantee your job will be waiting when you return.
Again, the specifics will determine whether it was handled legally or not, but this sounds like a blatant FMLA violation. Usually lawyers will give a first consultation for free and they may take his case on a pay-if-we-win basis (don’t do it for more than 30%!!) He should take advantage of that first consult (make sure when he makes the appt. that it is free).
He could also simply strong arm them by threatening to bring about a FMLA case. Often, if you push just a little, they won’t risk it or won’t bother dealing with it.

In countries in Europe where drinking laws and social rules are more relaxed when it comes to drinking is their a higher rate of alcoholism? Or is it the same or less than the United States?

In France where people start drinking wine with their meals from early childhood their is less alcoholism or problem drinking. Germany with it’s wonderfull beer festivals has less of a drinking culture and not so many alcoholics. The country I am comparing France and Germany to is Britain, where I live. We have recently changed our drinking laws by having longer opening hours in pubs. It was hoped it would reduce problems caused by drinking and we would have the same culture as continental Europe. However, this hasn’t happened in the year since the law was changed. Our drinking problems have just got worse. It seems to be a problem with the British mentality towards alcohol.

For what reason?

I was unaware there were laws specifically addressing alcoholism. I thought that was more of a medical and social concern than a legal issue.

Why is it that police officers have the highest rate of alcoholism, spousal abuse, suicide, and divorce?
Posted by admin in Drug & Alcohol Laws on August 10, 2010
Question by : Why is it that police officers have the highest rate of alcoholism, spousal abuse, suicide, and divorce?
I am considering pursuing a career in law enforcement but after having done a little bit of research and talking to a couple of police officers it seems that law enforcement personnel are plagued with alcoholism, spousal abuse, suicide, and divorce. Supposedly their rates for these four categories are higher than the national average. What can explain for these trends and how stressful and fun is a career in law enforcement.. (I would preferably like responses from current or former police officers but anyone is welcome to answer. Please state whether you are involved in law enforcement)

Answer by Bruce
I have not seen a single statistic to support your claims of alcoholism and abuse. If you have one, please post it.
I have seen a statistic on divorce that puts police at 60%. This may seem high, but the average for the entire US is 55%, so it is only slightly higher. You can probably account the extra 5% simply to working holidays, weekends, and lots of overtime.
Suicide has always been high in the police profession due to the stress, long hours, shift work, high expectations, and the fact they see the worst of society on a daily basis.

Question by Hotmami619: Mother in Law is causing anxiety attacks and driving me to alcoholism should I see a phsycologist?
The thought of her drives me crazy for hours. When my husband tells me he wants us to go to her house I have to make a liquor store run first..She’s not good to my mind. Do I need phycological evaluation? Do you think i could benefit..I’m trying to get better so I can save my marriage
I only drink when I have to see her so I don’t jump on her.
She’s manipulative and controlling here are some details;
We used to live with her to help her pay her mortgage. I got fed up with her telling my husband everthing I did from me slamming the toilet seat too load to who I was talking to on the phone….I confronted her and told her that I didn’t appreciate her telling the world that i manipulate her son???(she was doing the manipulating) IF he wasn’t home she would harrass me to tell her where he was at!!(Like I was a dictator or something) We moved out the week I confronted her finally!! After that she had a diabetic problem and was hospitaqlized…telling the whole family it was my fault!! Lil’ did she know we were there as well because out babies had hand foor and mouth disease…I had to bring it to her attention becuase she claimed her son didn’t care..she turned red and saw how upset I was.
We have 2 kids together. She’s white and was not happy that my babies’ eyes were brown and not blue or green!!

Someone I know had an employee who showed up at work drunk. It would make sense to fire them. He was told he could not fire the employee since there was a possibility the employee was an alcoholic and alcoholism is a disability you cannot be fired over.

back in 2000, my boyfriend had a drinking problem which made him very violent.. he was in a great depression & because of his drinking, it led him into very poor decision making.. he went to prison for 7 years… he is out & is doing very well, great new job, new car, we’ve even starting a new relationship…
at first drinking was a total NO NO… but after a few months I had allowed it only in my home only with me… we Promised eachother this…
this brought on a weekend kind of thing of us for about a month and a half… I’d get some coolers he get some beer… we would sit at my house, talk, listen to music, make love…. (we also do these things sober too)… I felt confident this was OK… but tonight is the second time I come home & he;s had a few to many drinks by himself… im not mad but VERY upset with my self because I knew he had a problem years ago…
please help me cope & deal with this situation, knowledge is power, if I understand the sickness I can deal.thanks
Divorce, Domestic violence, alcoholism & custody?
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on June 27, 2010
My husband took the classes for domestic violence, went through probation and was released, then free to start all over again. He was drunk went after one child and I tried to protect my child. It was like prison after that awful nasty things he did to me and the kids. He threatened to kill me and I called the police. x-mas eve. The police came 2 hours later , felt sorry for him! Said let him sleep it off. We were really scared after they left. We left x-mas day, never returned. People say leave, protect your kids.. etc. I left with my kids and left everything that I owned. Nothing was joint. Almost 5 months cant get anything except working out visitation to the benefit of the father. The only one he can manipulate is 6. The older ones dont want to even talk to the father. Do you think its fair to throw the little one back into his hands without any protection? All the the websites and stuff out their for help for domestic abuse…is this common?
Zaza, Pea brains? Did you even read the post?
The man has 2 duis, 2 domestic violations, 1 line cutting, no drivers license, 2 teens who dont ever want nothing to do with him, a PPO on him and there is still a chance he might get visitation! The only bad thing he could come up with was saying I was gay. Which was a lie. It was a way to humiliate me more in front of kids and family etc.
Can I contract the Alcoholism Disease from attending an AA meting? ?
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on June 26, 2010
I was court ordered to go to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. I was arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance, not alcohol. I enjoy taking Ambien sleeping pills, they help me sleep. That particular night I suppose I drove somewhere, Ambien causes blackout in high doses.
Anyways, I was court ordered to Alcoholics Anonymous for some reason. I don’t drink, alcohol hurts my stomach.
I was sitting in the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and I keep hearing everyone saying that they have a disease called Alcoholism. I have never heard of this Alcoholism Disease. I have heard of alcoholism, but I always thought if someone had alcoholism then they were homeless people. This confused me because I have to sit amongst these people and I don’t want to catch some disease. Is there a doctor at these AA meetings that is diagnosing these people with the Alcoholism Disease? I haven’t been diagnosed with the alcoholism disease, I have had people at the meeting tell me that I’m an alcoholic but they didn’t appear to be doctors. Does anyone know of any precautions I can take while I go to these AA meetings, so I don’t get the alcoholism virus?
I’m very concerned about this. Is it possible for me to catch the alcoholism disease from going to AA meetings? I can’t afford contracting the alcoholism virus at this time.
I don’t understand why the Judge of my Court Case forced me to go to Alcoholics Anonymous. I’m confused as to why the Judge sent me to a place where it is possible for me to contract a disease. The court ordering me to AA seems to go against my basic Human Rights, civil rights, and others.
Is it possible to catch the Alcoholism Disease or Virus from AA?
Child Custody and Alcoholism?

I’m due to give birth next week and I am no longer with the father because of his heavy drinking. I want him to be in my sons life as a positive role model but I am scared for him to have private visitations. How am I supposed to provide proof to the courts of his alcoholism? And will they order him to get treatment before he has unsupervised visitations? He does have 2 DUI’s but they are over 10 years old.
I live in Massachusetts
