Question by jess2110: How do you Get into the K9 Narcotics section of law enforcement?
Well i have never been in trouble with the law and my family and I have had dogs since i was little and i have a German Shepard of my own.

more than likely need to have a backgroudn with animals, or be in the force and volanteer for the job, what is your current status on that, depending on your situation you could be rejected…
k9 units are very expensive mentally and fiscally, they will not allow somebody with little experiance to handle a dog that can kill and scares people more than 3 armed officers could, one that could turn on an officer if it feels threatened… so i would say make sure you have a good background with animals and lawenforcement.

Go to Police Academy, become an officer, work really hard at regular Patrol work for the first 5-10 years, possibly more, show an interest in the K9 section (attend training sessions, lay tracks, take bites, hide narcotics for training), apply and hopefully get a position.
I don’t know anywhere where you go directly into the K9 section. You need to know what you are doing on the street before you can work K9. K9 is usually a tough competition and usually goes to the senior guys.
