Q&A: Does the probation dept. have to provide an interpreter for a class ordered by a judge? ?

Question by Mike: Does the probation dept. have to provide an interpreter for a class ordered by a judge? ?
With the ADA laws, I’m just wondering if the probation department is required to provide a sign language interpreter to a legally deaf individual for a drug and alcohol class that was ordered to be taken by the judge? Based on my understanding of the ADA I believe that they do.

correct under the ADA they should be required to provide an interpreter. but also do some research on the rehabilitation act of 1973 (i believe that is the date) do some research on that and then bring that up and THEN you will get what you need because under THIS act if they say they are not required under the ADA they ARE required under that specific act.

(i going to school to be a sign language interpreter..and i actually just learned this yesterday)

That would be my understanding as well. It would definitely fall into the ADA laws and be easy to implement. Otherwise, it would be a waste of taxpayer dollars to make this individual sit through a class that they would get absolutely NO benefit from…
