Prison is not a form of rehabilitation. It is worse for the person being incarcerated. They turn them into animals. I am opposed of the some of the tactics they use in Prisons now adays. They would be better off in Drug Rehabilitation Center.

Well with prison you get both they aren’t using and paying for their crime ! They can’t relapse .

Rehab… because it works if you really want it bad enough… you have to want to be clean though… i think they should at least be given that chance…
People sneak drugs in prison all the time… you are not necessarily clean when you are in prison and you are sure to relapse if you haven’t been given the “tools” for recovery… you certainly aren’t going to learn any of that in prison…
For a person who truly wants to recover, rehab with probation is the best option… in their first offense… however, if they continue to relapse and commit crimes, perhaps prison time would be the best thing…
Probation is doing time… and paying debts to society…

If they made drugs legal, they would not be a crime, thus eliminating the need for prisons…Then the answer is easy.

Hard question-
Prison potentially takes them away from the drugs (of course we know prisons are notorious for things being snuck in)
Rehab- they get the help they need and support but potential is that they have access to their drugs still
I would say a mix of prison to clean them up- say 6-10 weeks mixed with therapy and rehab in a halfway house. It may cost more, but who cares if it helps stop the problem. Too many repeat offenders for this junk.

I think rehab would work better. I know someone who needs to be in rehab bad, but I don’t have the authority to do anything about it. She is addicted to prescription pain killers. She talks about anyone that drinks, but can’t see she has a problem with drugs.

Drug addiction shouldn’t be a crime. There are thousands of addicts that function perfectly well in society.
If a crime is committed while under the influence, then using the drug should be against the law and part of the charge … much like alcohol. It’s not a crime to drink unless you drive under the influence. The crime is compounded if you hurt or kill someone this way.
If an addict is struggling to fit in society, rehab is a much better solution. This person has an illness. Why incarcerate them? We don’t do this to sick ppl.
US jails are full of non-violent drug offenders. The prison system is getting so powerful that it has become easy for it to expand. Build it, and they will come.
Drugs should be legal and taxed. The taxes should be used to educate the young to the dangers, prevention and rehab.
It’s foolish to allow organized crime to profit f/ this multi-billion dollar industry. Instead, we have waged a multi-million dollar unwinable war against drugs for 30 years.

Rehab.

Research done by the Rand Corporation shows that treatment is far more effective in reducing drug problems than any form of punishment.
Just FYI, there was a town in Pennsylvania a while back that investigated their own drug problem and found that the major source of drugs in the community was the local prison!!! As prison wardens will readily admit, drugs are just as available in prison, but they cost a little more.
If you want to understand the subject, and why the government relies on punishment instead of treatment, read the following items which give good histories of the subject.
http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm — this one is funny.
http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cumenu.htm — this is probably the best overall review of the subject ever written. It is the one book to read if you read only one.
