if you are mentally disabled (agoraphobic and alcoholic) and receiving SSD are you required to get treatment?

(it is not me, first of all) just curious for a family member, who likes to stay home, drink all day and not leave the house. Has some abusive tendencies.

Not sure. I have a heart condition and am on disability.. I had to fill out a survey after about 5 years but after that nothing. A doctor had to state I was disabled. I don’t know if they send him forms to restate my condition or not.

A number of years ago, Congress passed a number of changes to the Social Security disability laws that made disability claimants ineligible for benefits if alcohol or drug abuse was a material contributing factor to their disability.

Periodically, usually every 3 years, there will be a review and a person will be found to be still eligible for benefits or not. This will require among other things a statement from a doctor (in most cases – some disabilities never go away). If a person is receiving benefits on the basis of agoraphobia, I can guarantee that medical documentation will be asked for that it has continued. If they are receiving no treatment – there will be no documentation to provide- so no benefits. If it was discovered that the primary cause of their agoraphobia was alcoholism, they might even be required to pay back some of their more recent benefits.

Alcoholism isn’t a disability. It’s a treatable disease. I don’t know if agoraphobia is a considered a disability in the sense that it’s something officially recognized by the government as disability, it may be, but someone will have to clarify that. It may help to stage an intervention. I had a problem with alcohol at one point, I rarely drank excessively, but when I did, I was not a pleasant person to be around. Fortunately, I was able to recognize there was a problem, decided that it wasn’t in my best interest to drink and I haven’t touched the stuff in 12 years.
