Are Alcoholics Anonymous Members, Who are Roman Catholics, Required to take Sacramental Wine?

Or is it optional for them and others who wish to abstain?
Thanks to all for the explanations. I appreciate them.

I’ve actually never been to a mass where the congregation in general gets to drink the wine. Wafers only in every Catholic church I’ve ever been in and I was raised Catholic.

it is optional. Some people have been known to have allergic reactions to the communion wafer, and so only drinks the wine and not the bread. So it is optional, and many priests who are alcoholic either drink a non-alcoholic wine or none at all. I know because I have seen it happen. Plus I am a former seminarian.

It is optional to take the Precious Blood. As a matter of fact you can take either the Body or the Blood, or both if you prefer. It is up to the individual. Each includes the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ.

    God bless,

As a recovered alcoholic for many years I personally know sober members of AA who partake of sacramantal wine, not grape juice because they have been healed and don’t take it to get drunk. They take it to honor the sacraments.
Only those who want to get drunk and make a conscious choice use sacramental wine as an excuse to drink again.

Ok I am a member of both AA and The Catholic Church.

I do take the Precious Blood during communion. I usually only drink a tiny drop of the Precious Blood. I have found it not to be a problem or make me want to go out and drink. The times when I have been tempted to get drunk are when I am at home alone or go out and buy a six pack. If I have a full beer or two from a store or a bar then look out but do not feel that way during Mass ever. Hard to explain fully.

Yes, if they’ve been confirmed, and don’t have any special kind of permission.

Seems like that are more pressing things to worry about… they can abstain.

Nobody (catholic or otherwise) is “Required” to take the sacrimental wine during mass in a Catholic church. My husband and family are all Catholic, and not all of them take the wine.

If you’re a true believer, you’re not drinking wine, you’re drinking the blood of Jesus.
